Media & Press

Working on a story? Start with us.

The Communications & Community Relations team is the best first stop for journalists working with the City of Lawrence.

We value the role journalists play in helping our community understand its local government, and we want to make your work easier. Our team can help you identify the right City source, coordinate interviews, provide background and context, locate information and data, connect you with subject-matter experts, and respond to questions about City programs, services and decisions.

You don’t need to know which department to call. That’s our job.

Contact Communications & Community Relations with your request, topic and deadline, and we’ll work to connect you with the right people and information as quickly as possible.

You can do so by emailing us at citycommunications@lawrenceks.gov

Our commitment to journalists

We believe strong relationships with campus, local, regional and inter/national media contribute to a better-informed community. That means being accessible, responsive and helpful, even when the coverage explores complicated topics.

When you contact us, you can expect us to:

  • Respond and acknowledge your request.

  • Help identify the best City source for your story.

  • Coordinate interviews and source connections.

  • Provide background, context, data and existing public information when available.

  • Understand and work with your deadline.

  • Tell you what we know—and be clear about what we don't know or cannot provide.

For media inquiries, it always starts with us

About Our Team

Communications & Community Relations helps connect the City of Lawrence with the people we serve.

Our work is grounded in the City’s Strategic Plan and its commitment to meaningful community engagement. Put simply: we help people understand what their City is doing and create opportunities for people to help shape what comes next.

Our team leads and supports Citywide communications, media relations, brand management, digital communications, community engagement, multimedia production and other efforts designed to make City government easier to understand and engage with.

Communications

We help City departments communicate services, programs, projects, decisions and events clearly and consistently. That includes media relations, news and public information, digital communications, social media, storytelling, brand management, video and multimedia production.

We also listen. Community questions, feedback and even confusion help us understand where City communications can be clearer and more useful.

Community Engagement

Good local government doesn't just communicate to people. It communicates with them.

Our community engagement work helps City teams intentionally inform, consult, involve and collaborate with the people of Lawrence. We help departments design engagement opportunities, reach people where they are and create meaningful ways for community voices to inform City work.
