More about Geographic Information Systems ("GIS")

The GIS is a software system used daily by City staff to view, store and share map information.  The City's GIS Team is made up of staff from Information Technology ("IT"), Municipal Services and Operations Department ("MSO"), and various staff from other departments as well. Their job is to keep Lawrence's map information current and accurate.  The GIS data includes:

  • Physical features - streets, pipes, hydrants, sidewalks, etc..
  • Community information - addresses, zoning districts, and stormwater billing details.
  • Maps and data for analysis - helping visualize trends, plan City projects, or answer public questions.  GIS staff create maps, dashboards, and reports to present information clearly and responsibly.  Their goal is to help everyone, from residents to City employees, access information that supports good decision-making.
