Candidate Physical Abilities Testing (CPAT)

CPAT Requirements and General Information

The Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical department requires all candidates to submit a validCandidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certificate issued within one year at the time of application.

What is the CPAT?

The CPAT is a standardized physical assessment jointly developed by theInternational Association of Firefighters (IAFF) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC). It evaluates the essential physical abilities required for firefighting.

Overview of the CPAT Test

The CPAT consists ofeight sequential events that assess strength, stamina, agility, and coordination.

  1. Stair Climb
    • What You’ll Do: Climb stairs for 3 minutes and 20 seconds wearing a 50-pound weight vest, plus an additional 25-pound shoulder load.
    • Why It’s Tested: Simulates carrying heavy gear up stairs in emergencies.
  2. Hose Drag
    • What You’ll Do: Drag a charged fire hose 75 feet.
    • Why It’s Tested: Reflects the physical demands of moving hoses during fire suppression.
  3. Equipment Carry
    • What You’ll Do: Carry two saws over a set distance.
    • Why It’s Tested: Measures strength and endurance for handling equipment on scene.
  4. Ladder Raise and Extension
    • What You’ll Do: Raise and extend a 24-foot ladder.
    • Why It’s Tested: Simulates ladder setup during emergencies.
  5. Forcible Entry
    • What You’ll Do: Strike a target with a sledgehammer to simulate breaking down a door.
    • Why It’s Tested: Evaluates upper body strength and power.
  6. Search
    • What You’ll Do: Navigate a dark, maze-like 64-foot confined space while crawling.
    • Why It’s Tested: Assesses agility, strength, and composure under stress.
  7. Rescue
    • What You’ll Do: Drag a 165-pound mannequin 35 feet.
    • Why It’s Tested: Simulates rescuing a victim during emergency operations.
  8. Ceiling Breach and Pull
    • What You’ll Do: Pull a weighted ceiling device using a rope to simulate breaching ceilings.
    • Why It’s Tested: Tests strength and endurance for firefighting tasks.

CPAT Time Limits

Candidates must complete all eight events within a strict time limit of10 minutes and 20 seconds. Exceeding the time limit results in disqualification.

Fitness Preparation

The CPAT is physically demanding and requires a high level of fitness. Successful candidates typically train in:

  • Strength: Focus on functional exercises to build core and upper-body strength.
  • Endurance: Incorporate cardiovascular exercises like running or cycling.
  • Coordination: Practice movements that replicate firefighting tasks.

A structured training program can significantly improve performance and confidence.

Certificate Validity

  • A CPAT certificate is valid for one year from the issue date.
  • Candidates without a valid certificate at the time of application must retake and pass the test.
