How Do I File a Police Report?

What Records are Available?

Records maintained by the Lawrence Police Department Records Division include:

  • Accident Reports
  • Incident Reports
  • Photographs
  • Audio & Video
  • Intoxilyzer Records

TheKansas Open Records Act recognizes that some records contain information which is confidential or sensitive in nature.  For this reason, the act lists a number or exceptions that may include:

  • Personnel Information
  • Medical Treatment Records
  • Criminal Investigation Records
  • Incident Report Narratives
  • Witness Statements
  • Photographs
  • Audio & Video
  • Intoxilyzer Records

How Much Does a Record Cost?

Open records pages of reports cost $5.00 for the first 10 pages, please ask for a cost estimate for all other items.  Payment is required at the time of request.

How Do I Request a Record?

Step 1

Contact the Records Division to ascertain if the record you want is available.  You will need the approximate date, place and type of incident or the police report number.  Some records are not automatically open public records and may not be released without completing additional steps.  The request will be reviewed and a response generated in three (3) business days.  The response may indicate that more time will be needed for the review.

Step 2

If the record is available and open, you will need to do one of the following:

  • Make the request in person at the Lawrence Police Department Records Division
  • Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope with a written request that includes:
    • Your mailing address
    • Your phone number
    • Your email address
    • Any other information that might be pertinent to the review of your request
  • Email your request to recordrequest@lkpd.org

How Do I Request Criminal History Information?

If the record is not requested by law enforcement, a state or federal agency, the request should be directed to theKansas Bureau of Investigation.
