City of Lawrence GIS Team Wins First Place for Downtown Parking Map

The City of Lawrence Geographic Information System (GIS) team won first place at the 2026 Kansas Association of Mappers Conference. They won in the Digital Masterpiece category for their recently published Downtown Parking Map. It was authored by Micah Seybold, GIS Manager, with data support from Andrea Repinsky, Analyst-Data Architect, and research and direction from Brad Harrell, Parking Manager, and members of the City's parking division.

The Downtown Parking Map was launched in May 2026 ahead of the World Cup festivities and an anticipated influx of visitors to Lawrence. The goal was to make it easier for visitors to understand where different types of parking are available throughout Downtown Lawrence.

The timing of the Downtown Parking Map also aligned with the GIS team's plan to replace a legacy map built using outdated technology. The new map was was built using the ArcGIS Online Experience Builder.

The project team drew inspiration from excellent regional parking maps, such as KC Parking, Ames Parkopedia, and Park Omaha, to help guide the design requirements. The new Downtown Parking Map was made to be accessible from mobile devices with accessible design, clear cartographic map reference, and simple view switching between different types of parking.

The Downtown Parking Map can be explored online here.
