City offices closed, service alterations set for Independence Day

City offices will be closed on Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day. If you're looking to kickoff your holiday weekend celebrations, plan to stop by Summerfest on Saturday, July 4, at the Douglas County Fairgrounds from 4 - 10 p.m. This year's Summerfest includes local music, kids' activities, food trucks, aerial acrobatics, fire performance and a drone show!

The event also includes a special tribute gallery honoring public servants in Douglas County. In honor of America at 250, Parks, Recreation and Culture partnered with the Watkins Museum of History and the Dole Institute of Politics to create the gallery, debuting at Summerfest. SOLID WASTE: There is no delay in collection for Independence Day. All solid waste collection will happen according to your regular collection schedule. Bulk pickup, roll-off service, and cart maintenance requests will not occur on Friday, July 3. The Lawrence/Douglas County Household Hazardous Waste Facility will be closed Friday, July 3. Additionally, the Compost Facility will be closed Saturday, July 4.

PARKING: Parking meters, lots and garages will be free on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4.

TRANSIT: Friday, July 3: Bus Routes 1-12 and Route 45 will operate. Extended service on Route 4 until 1 a.m. Reduced schedule for Routes 11 and 12. Central Station will be closed. Saturday, July 4: There will be no public transit service on Independence Day. Fixed-route, paratransit, and on-demand buses will not operate. PARKS, RECREATION AND CULTURE: The administrative office in South Park and the cemeteries office will be closed on Friday, July 3. The following parks and recreation facilities will also be closed Saturday, July 4:

  • Community Building
  • East Lawrence Recreation Center
  • Holcom Park Recreation Center
  • Sports Pavilion Lawrence
  • Prairie Park Nature Center

The Aquatic Division will have altered hours for the holiday.

  • Indoor Aquatic Center will be closed on July 4
  • Outdoor Aquatic Center will be open from 1-6 p.m. on July 4.
  • There will be no aquatic fitness classes July 4. These classes will be held on July 3.
  • The Indoor Aquatic Center will be open July 3, from 6:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. for competition pool lap swim.

Unified Day Camp, Gymnastics Camp, and Summer Playgrounds (Neighborhood Drop-In Program) will not be held on Friday, July 3. All will resume on Monday, July 6.

There will be no recreation classes or lifelong recreation programming from Saturday, July 4 — Sunday, July 5, and these programs will be held Friday, July 3. This includes all fitness, dance, gymnastics, and martial arts programs.

There are no adult or youth sports league games scheduled Friday, July 3 — Sunday, July 5.

Eagle Bend Golf Course and Learning Center, 1250 E. 902 Rd., will be open on Saturday, July 4, from 7:00 a.m. until dark. They accept tee times one week in advanceonline or by phone: 785-748-0600.
